A. Marshay (20th Century), A Masted Sailing Vessel at Sea, 1932
Description
This work is a maritime oil painting on board by the artist A. Marshay, dated 1932. The composition depicts a multi-masted sailing vessel with sails set, navigating a turbulent blue sea. The artist has used fluid brushwork with impasto highlights to represent the white foam of the waves. A rocky, pale-coloured headland is visible in the lower foreground. The sky is rendered with soft, blended clouds in pale tones. The painting is signed and dated A. MARSHAY – 1932 in red paint in the lower right corner. It is presented in an ornate gilt-composition swept frame featuring pierced scrollwork, shell motifs, and acanthus leaf detailing. The reverse of the board is covered with aged brown paper and fitted with a red hanging cord.
