Lot 145: Two Cased Sets of Hallmarked Sterling Silver Coffee and Teaspoons
2 views
This lot comprises two independent cased sets of sterling silver spoons.
The first set (left) consists of several sterling silver coffee spoons. Each spoon features an egg-shaped bowl and a slender, plain stem terminating in a black, ovoid bean-shaped finial. The reverse of the bowls are struck with a series of hallmarks. While somewhat worn, these marks include a set of characters that appear to read R&B in a rectangular cartouche, followed by a lion passant for sterling silver, an anchor for the Birmingham assay office, and a lowercase date letter in a shield that is not fully legible.
The second set (right) consists of several sterling silver teaspoons. These spoons feature a decorative beaded or pips border along the length of the stems, leading to a flared foliate-style handle. The reverse of each bowl bears a clear set of hallmarks: an impressed maker’s mark consisting of the letters F.W.S within a shield-shaped cartouche, a lion passant indicating sterling silver, an anchor for the Birmingham assay office, and the lowercase date letter f in a shield, corresponding to the year 1930.
Both sets are presented in their respective fitted display cases. One case is lined with cream-coloured satin and black velvet, while the other features a blue satin and velvet interior.
