P.E. Holland, Great Warrior, Limited Edition Aviation Print Signed by Les Smithson
Description
A limited edition commemorative military aviation printb titled Great Warrior, by the artist P.E. Holland. The artwork depicts two Avro Lancaster bombers, specifically aircraft AJ-O, flying at a low altitude over a body of water at twilight, evoking the historic Dambusters raid of Operation Chastise. A spectral image of a Native American warrior is superimposed within the dark, clouded sky above the lead aircraft. The lower central margin features the crest of No. 617 Squadron RAF above the printed title and a tribute reading, A Tribute To Dambuster Pilot – Bill Townsend AJ-O. The print is hand-numbered 8/200 in pencil to the lower-left margin. It bears a printed artist attribution Painted by: P.E. Holland to the lower-right and is hand-signed in pencil by Dambuster veteran Leslie Les Smithson, who served as the flight engineer on Bill Townsend’s crew. This unframed lithograph serves as a historical tribute to the crew of the Royal Air Force.
