Description

An extensive ceramic dinner and tea service by John Maddock and Sons, decorated in the enduring Indian Tree pattern. This Chinoiserie-inspired design features a central gnarled tree with vibrant floral and arboreal motifs in a palette of rose pink, apple green, and cobalt blue, enclosed within a stylised geometric border. The service comprises a comprehensive range of pieces including dinner plates, luncheon plates, side plates, shallow bowls, teacups and saucers, three graduated jugs, and a teapot. Each piece is executed in a cream-coloured earthenware body with transfer-printed decoration and hand-painted highlights. The undersides bear the brown transfer-printed manufacturer’s mark featuring a crown above an M within a diamond, inscribed INDIAN TREE’S and MADE IN ENGLAND, accompanied by the hand-painted gold decorator’s mark 1168. Dinner plates approximately 25cm diameter; Teapot approximately 16cm height.

Condition report:

The service is offered in generally good condition, commensurate with age and use. There is minor surface wear to the glazed surfaces and slight discoloration visible on the unglazed foot rims of select pieces. No significant chips, cracks, or restorations were noted upon initial inspection. The gilding and enamel colours remain bright.
