Lot 377:
Swiss Bells-in-Sight Cylinder Music Box with Inlaid Case, Circa 1880
Description
A late 19th-century Swiss cylinder music box of the bells-in-sight variety, a sought-after design featuring an integrated percussion section. The movement comprises a large, pinned brass cylinder and a tuned steel comb, supplemented by three polished metal bells with a bright lustre, struck by three red-coloured hammers. The mechanism is protected by an internal glass-topped frame and is housed in a rectangular wooden case. The exterior displays decorative inlay panels with cross-banded borders, an ornate metal keyhole escutcheon, and rests on four metal-shod block feet. The interior of the lid and the inner compartments are finished in an ebonised lacquer. A small white label numbered 2819 is adhered to the front, with further handwritten notations found on an interior sticker. This piece represents the high-quality mechanical craftsmanship of the Geneva or Sainte-Croix regions during the Victorian era. Dimensions: Approximately 48 cm x 26 cm x 21 cm.
Condition report:
The wooden case exhibits a natural patina with surface abrasions, minor chips to the edges, and general wear consistent with age. The ebonised interior shows significant scuffing and some loss of finish. The musical movement appears complete with all bells and hammers intact, though the mechanical timing and spring tension have not been tested for performance. The original tune sheet is absent.
