Description

An American Primitive blanket chest dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Constructed entirely from pine as the primary wood with no secondary wood used, this rustic piece features wide-plank joinery and a hinged lid comprised of three boards. The chest is supported by characteristic bootjack ends, where the side panels are shaped to form the feet. The construction is simple and utilitarian, utilising nailed joinery consistent with vernacular furniture of the period. The piece is finished in an older dark forest green paint. Hardware is limited to an original iron keyhole surround for an internal lock; no key is present. There are no visible maker marks or signatures. This piece does not contain drawers, therefore dovetail construction is not applicable. No significant alterations are evident. Dimensions: 95 cm W x 48 cm D x 55 cm H.

Condition report:

This chest is in fair antique condition. As there are no drawers, there is no drawer-specific wear or dovetail damage to report. The dark green painted finish exhibits heavy wear, including scuffing, scratches, and significant chippy loss, especially on the lid and along the edges. There is visible discolouration and dark staining on the top surface. An auction lot sticker is present on the front panel. The iron hardware appears original, though the key is missing. There is no veneer. The wood shows minor splintering and loss at the corners and edges of the lid, but the piece remains structurally sound with no significant repairs noted.
