Lot 330: A Victorian Blue and White Transfer-Printed Ironstone Wash Jug and Basin Set
1 view
A large Victorian-era wash jug and matching basin set, constructed from heavy white ironstone. The set features an underglaze blue transfer-printed floral design throughout. The jug is of traditional footed form with a foliate-moulded handle and a scalloped, flared rim. Its body is decorated with scrolling foliate motifs and large stylized peony blossoms. The handle and rim are detailed with solid blue lining. The coordinating deep basin displays a matching floral interior and is finished with a trellis or lattice-work border around the wide rim, interspersed with small quatrefoil panels. This geometric border is repeated around the foot of the jug. The glaze shows a slight creamy tone characteristic of 19th-century earthenware. A small white rectangular adhesive label is present on the side of the jug, reading SHELBYS AUCTIONEERS LOT 330 01132502626. A second, smaller white rectangular adhesive label is positioned near the jug handle, bearing the hand-written number 12935. No maker’s marks or factory backstamps are visible on the exterior surfaces shown.
