Lot 317: A pair of Chinese grey and white jade horses on carved wood stands
1 view
A pair of Chinese hardstone horses, likely jade, carved in a standing posture. The stone features a variegated grey and white mottled appearance with dark inclusions throughout the bodies. The arched tails and manes are carved from a more translucent, pale yellowish-celadon portion of the stone. One horse is depicted looking forward while the other has its head turned to the side. Both figures are mounted upon matching dark wood stands featuring pierced openwork and carved foliate cloud-head motifs.
One horse bears a white adhesive rectangular label on its left flank with the handwritten alphanumeric reference 12935 p. A second auction house label is present on the glass shelf in front of the items.
