Lot 292: A Collection of Carved Wood Walking Sticks and a Framed Assortment of Metal Artifact Fragments
3 views
This lot comprises a group of ethnographic and decorative walking sticks and a framed display of historical metal fragments. The collection of sticks includes a light-coloured wooden fokos-style shepherd’s axe stick, featuring a carved axe-head terminal and traditional geometric motifs such as diamonds and X-patterns along the upper shaft. A second stick is carved from a naturalistically textured wood with a hooked handle. A third example features a black-painted lower section with a light-coloured upper shaft decorated with hand-carved circular and geometric patterns. The remaining two sticks consist of a dark-finished tapered wooden staff and a simpler walking cane with a reddish-brown finish.
The lot also includes a modern white shadow-box frame containing a collection of mounted metal fragments. These artifacts include two dark metal harness-style zoomorphic fittings, two small metal arrowheads or points, a circular buckle or fitting, and a central gold-coloured plaque embossed with an avian or eagle motif. The metal fragments show archaeological patina and oxidation. A small white rectangle is adhered to one of the walking sticks, but the text on it is not legible.
