Large Satsuma Style Polychrome Ceramic Fish Bowl Planter with Carved Wooden Stand
Description
A large ceramic fish bowl or planter of tapered ovoid form with a broad, flat rim. The exterior is decorated in a Japanese Satsuma style featuring a dense millefleur ground of polychrome enamels including shades of pink, blue, yellow, and green. This floral ground surrounds two large heart-shaped cartouches containing figurative landscape scenes. The visible scene depicts several figures in traditional robes within a garden setting by a lakeside, complete with cherry blossoms and architectural pavilions. The decoration is enhanced with extensive moriage (raised enamel) detailing and gilding throughout. The flat rim is finished with a continuous border of repeating floral and geometric motifs. The interior is finished in a pale celadon-toned glaze. The vessel is presented on a separate five-legged carved wooden stand with a dark finish and curvilinear stretchers.
