A pair of glazed ceramic garden seats or plant stands, modelled as caparisoned elephants. These items are constructed from earthenware with a majolica-style lead glaze. Each seat is shaped as a standing elephant supporting a flat, rectangular platform with canted corners on its back, set upon a rectangular base. The elephant bodies are finished in a rich cobalt blue glaze, while the decorative caparisons and harnesses are rendered in cream, ochre, and brown glazes. The caparisons feature relief-moulded floral and scrollwork designs. The tusks and toenails are picked out in a cream glaze. One elephant bears a white adhesive label on the edge of the top platform with the handwritten number 12676. There are no visible maker’s marks or factory stamps.
Height: 35 cm – 45 cm.
