Lot 127:
Late Victorian Mahogany Drop Octagon Wall Clock
Description
A late 19th-century mahogany-cased drop-dial wall clock, frequently referred to as a short drop or schoolhouse regulator. The case features an octagonal surround for the dial and a short drop trunk with a small glazed window for viewing the pendulum, which is decorated with a gilt-transfer inner border. The circular painted dial displays black Roman numerals and a simple minute track, with twin winding apertures at the 4 and 8 o’clock positions, indicating a mechanical twin-train movement with a striking mechanism. Faint and worn markings at the bottom of the dial include the word LONDON. The clock is fitted with two black metal hands, the hour hand featuring a spade tip. The exterior is finished in a mahogany veneer with a high-gloss surface.
