Lot 431:
A Pair of Antique British Salt-Glazed Stoneware Storage Crocks
Description
A pair of large late 19th or early 20th-century stoneware storage crocks of British manufacture. The first item is a tapered cylindrical storage jar with integral lug handles and a fitted lid, featuring a traditional two-tone salt glaze with a honey-brown upper section and lid over a cream-coloured lower body. This piece bears a small white label to the shoulder marked 50 l. The form and glaze are typical of regional potteries such as those in the Derbyshire or Yorkshire areas. The second item is a large cylindrical bread crock with lug handles and a domed lid with a central turned knob. It is finished in a uniform cream salt glaze and decorated to the front with a black transfer-printed label for BREAD within an ornate foliate scrolling border. Both pieces are representative of utilitarian domestic stoneware production from the period.
Capacity: 50 litres (as marked).
