Description

A large cylindrical stoneware spirit barrel of a type common in the late 19th or early 20th century. The vessel is constructed with a rounded shoulder leading to a short, narrow neck and is fitted with a substantial single strap handle. Near the base, there is a circular bung hole designed to receive a dispensing tap. The exterior features a traditional two-tone salt glaze finish, with a dark iron-brown slip applied to the upper section including the handle and shoulder, contrasting with the cream-coloured glaze on the main body. An impressed mark consisting of a single uppercase letter U is located on the body just above the bung hole, likely serving as a factory batch or size indicator. A small modern auction label with the number 9774 is adhered to the handle. This style of utilitarian stoneware was widely produced by British industrial potteries, notably those in the Lambeth and Derbyshire regions.
