Lot 230:
A 19th-Century Yataghan Style Brass-Hilted Sword Bayonet
Description
A 19th-century sword bayonet featuring a long, single-edged steel blade with a broad, shallow fuller and a recurved yataghan profile. The blade terminates in a spear point. The hilt is constructed with a solid, ribbed brass grip and a bird’s head pommel, which incorporates a press-button spring-catch mechanism for attachment to a rifle. The crossguard is made of steel, featuring a muzzle ring on one side and a downward-curving quillon on the other. A white rectangular adhesive sticker bearing the digits 8814 is present on the flat of the blade, which corresponds to an auction lot number. No visible manufacturer marks, dates, or inspection stamps are present. The design is characteristic of mid-19th-century patterns such as the French Model 1842 and its derivatives used during the American Civil War.
Blade length: 57 cm.
