Description

This lot comprises a pair of framed decorative prints depicting historical maps of England and Wales, produced in the seventeenth-century style of the cartographer John Speed (1552–1629). The first map depicts England, with the title England displayed within a cartouche on the left side. The map is bordered at the top and bottom by decorative rows featuring various figures in period costume and heraldic coats of arms. The second map depicts Wales, with the title Wales printed vertically along the left-hand margin, and is similarly decorated with vignettes and figures in the top and bottom borders. Both prints are presented on paper that has been treated to achieve a heavily foxed and browned appearance to simulate an antique aesthetic. They are housed in matching dark-stained wooden frames with a thin gold-toned inner slip. A small white auction label bearing the number 7231 is affixed to the frame of the map of England.
