Description

This lot consists of a framed print on paper after the original 1875 oil painting by Elizabeth Thompson (Lady Butler) titled ‘The 28th Regiment at Quatre Bras’. The scene depicts British infantrymen of the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot forming a defensive square to resist a French cavalry charge during the Battle of Quatre Bras in 1815. The composition shows soldiers in various states of combat, with those in the front rank kneeling with fixed bayonets while the rear ranks fire their muskets into the surrounding smoke. An officer on a white charger is positioned to the left of the infantry square. The print is presented under glass with a cream-coloured mat and is housed in a wide, polished dark wood frame. A small white inventory label with the number 9703 is attached to the bottom centre of the mat.
