Description

This lot consists of three original British military campaign medals issued for service during the Second World War. The group includes one Defence Medal and two War Medals 1939-1945. The Defence Medal obverse features the bareheaded effigy of King George VI with the inscription GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX F : D : IND : IMP. The reverse shows the Royal Crown atop an oak sapling, flanked by a lion and a lioness, with the dates 1939 and 1945 and the words THE DEFENCE MEDAL. It is suspended from an original silk ribbon of green, orange, and green stripes. The two War Medals feature the crowned effigy of King George VI on the obverse with the legend GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX ET INDIAE IMP. The reverse depicts a lion standing over a fallen double-headed dragon, marked with the dates 1939 and 1945. These are suspended from original red, white, and blue striped silk ribbons. The medals are struck in cupro-nickel. As is standard for British issues of this period, the medals are unnamed. One ribbon has a small adhesive lot tag with the handwritten number 7705.
