A Hungarian First World War Commemorative Medal for Combatants 1914-1918
Description
A Hungarian First World War Commemorative Medal (Magyar Háborús Emlékérem) established in 1929 for veterans of the 1914-1918 conflict. The circular medal is struck in silvered bronze. The obverse features a central motif of a Model 1916 steel helmet (Stahlhelm) set against a plain field with a laurel spray to the right. The border bears the Latin inscription PRO DEO ET PATRIA 1914-1918. The reverse depicts the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Hungary, comprising a shield with a double cross and stripes surmounted by the Holy Crown of St. Stephen. Behind the shield are two crossed swords, signifying the combatant class of the award. The central design is flanked by a wreath of oak leaves to the right and laurel leaves to the left. The medal is suspended from a traditional Austro-Hungarian style triangular ribbon featuring green and white vertical stripes with red borders, representing the Hungarian national colours. This specific ribbon pattern indicates the award was for combat service.
