WWII German Eastern Front Medal Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42
Description
A die-struck zinc Eastern Front Medal, also known as the Medaille Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42, featuring a distinctive top section shaped as a German M35 steel helmet. The obverse displays a central eagle with folded wings perched upon a swastika, superimposed over a horizontal stick grenade. The reverse bears the embossed inscription WINTERSCHLACHT IM OSTEN 1941/42 positioned above a crossed sword and laurel branch. The award is suspended from its original 30mm red ribbon which features a central black stripe flanked by thin white lines. This medal was colloquially referred to by German service personnel as the Frozen Meat Medal (Gefrierfleischorden). A manufacturer mark is present on the suspension ring but is not clearly legible. The item is housed in a clear plastic protective sleeve with a handwritten dealer’s identification note.
