Welsbach Kern and Victorian Cast Metal Lighting and Heating Components, Circa 1890s
Description
This collection comprises three distinct pieces of late 19th-century metalware, headlined by a Welsbach Kern gas burner or heater component. The Kern piece is crafted from cast metal with a decorative green-grey finish, featuring elaborate scrollwork and the embossed manufacturer name to the front, with a brass-toned valve attached to the rear. Accompanying this is a polished brass-toned oil lamp base featuring a circular burner assembly and a silver-toned pedestal foot. The final item is a highly decorative cast metal lamp base with deep floral relief patterns and a heavily oxidised matte grey surface. These pieces represent the ornate industrial design of the 1890s and the transition of domestic illumination technology. The items together span approximately 20 inches in length.
Condition report:
The collection is offered in varied antique condition. The Kern stand shows surface wear and oxidation to the finish. The brass lamp base is missing its glass chimney and shows tarnish to the pedestal. The floral cast metal base is incomplete, lacking its burner assembly and font, and shows heavy oxidation throughout. All items are sold as found for restoration or decorative use.
