A Pair of Mid-20th Century Hand-Carved African Ebony Wood Busts
Description
A pair of vintage African-style carved hardwood busts, likely dating from the mid-20th century. The pair consists of two stylized heads, one male and one female, carved from a dense, dark hardwood, possibly ebony or a similarly heavy tropical timber. The female bust features a high, ridged hairstyle and refined facial features, mounted on a textured, stippled base that provides a visual contrast to the smooth, polished surface of the face and neck. A small white adhesive tag is present on the neck area with handwritten characters, possibly 26. The male bust depicts a man with a closely cropped, textured hairstyle and a smooth, rounded base. Both carvings exhibit a dark, uniform finish. These items are characteristic of the souvenir art produced for the export market in the mid-20th century, often associated with carving traditions from East Africa.
Female bust height: approximately 30 cm – 32 cm.
