A British Crimea Medal with Sebastopol Clasp, 1854
Description
A British silver campaign medal issued for service during the Crimean War between 1854 and 1856. The obverse features the Young Head profile of Queen Victoria facing left, inscribed VICTORIA REGINA with the date 1854 below the bust. The reverse depicts a standing Roman soldier armed with a sword and shield being crowned with a laurel wreath by a winged figure of Victory, with the word CRIMEA in the exergue. The medal is fitted with a single silver ornate oak leaf pattern clasp inscribed SEBASTOPOL. It is attached to an ornate swivelling scroll-pattern suspender and its original light blue silk ribbon with yellow borders. The edge of the medal appears to be unnamed, which is characteristic of issues to certain units or the Royal Navy.
