British 1812 Pattern Belgic Shako Plate for the 33rd Regiment of Foot
Description
A British Army 1812 Pattern ‘Belgic’ shako plate, specifically attributed to the 33rd (The 1st Yorkshire West Riding) Regiment of Foot. The plate is manufactured from die-struck brass in the characteristic tombstone or cartouche shape. It is surmounted by a royal crown above the central field, which features the intertwined script cypher GR for King George III. The regimental numerals 33 are embossed at the lower right corner. This specific pattern of headgear plate was worn by British line infantry during the late Napoleonic Wars, including the Peninsular campaign and the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The piece is professionally presented in a dark stained wooden frame with a double mount of red and black. A small white label with the handwritten reference number 9703 is attached to the glass.
