A Large 19th Century Japanese Arita Porcelain Imari Charger
Description
A large Japanese Arita porcelain charger, decorated in the traditional Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and enriched with gilt highlights. The central composition features a dynamic arrangement of overlapping fan-shaped panels depicting a mountainous landscape and a lush floral garden with chrysanthemums, bisected by a cylindrical scroll motif. The surrounding border consists of a deep cobalt blue ground embellished with intricate gilt floral scrolling, interspersed with circular medallions containing scale and geometric patterns. The reverse displays a three-character red overglaze mark identifying the piece as Arita-yaki (有田焼) alongside an indistinct impressed square seal. Diameter: approximately 40 cm (16 inches).
Condition report:
The charger is presented in good overall condition. There is minor surface wear to the decoration and gilding consistent with age and use. Typical soiling is present to the unglazed foot rim. The piece is currently fitted with a modern metal spring-wire wall hanger.
