Description

A significant Japanese Arita porcelain charger of circular form, decorated in the traditional Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and highlights of gold gilding. The composition features a central circular medallion containing hand-painted floral motifs, surrounded by six radiating fan-shaped panels. These panels alternate between finely rendered mountain landscapes with traditional architecture and stylised floral designs. The reverse is decorated with simple blue and red scroll motifs and bears a three-character iron-red mark reading Arita-yaki (Arita Ware). Three distinct kiln spur marks are visible to the base from the firing process. This piece dates to the late Meiji period (c. 1890-1912). Diameter: 18.5 inches.

Condition report:

The charger is presented in good overall condition, free from any visible chips, cracks, or professional restoration. There is minor surface wear to the overglaze enamels and gilding, particularly to the central medallion and rim, which is consistent with age and display. Currently fitted with a removable wire spring-tension hanger.
