Lot 164:
A Large Italianate Majolica Style Ceramic Ewer with Sculptural Dragon Handle
Description
A substantial Italianate Majolica style ceramic ewer, likely a late 19th or early 20th-century revivalist piece. The vessel features a classic bulbous body and a dramatic, undulating flared spout. The main body is decorated with hand-painted blue and white scrolling foliate motifs in the Renaissance taste. It is distinguished by a prominent sculptural zoomorphic handle fashioned as a winged serpent or dragon, finished in vibrant green and yellow glazes. The handle terminates at the shoulder with a finely moulded lion’s mask. The ewer sits upon a spreading footed base which echoes the blue and white decorative scheme, finished with a yellow-bordered rim. No maker’s marks are visible. Height: approximately 50 cm.
Condition report:
The ewer is in fair to poor condition. There is a significant structural break at the junction of the stem and the main body, which has been subject to a coarse and visible adhesive repair. Several prominent hairline cracks are visible across the body of the vessel, accompanied by various areas of glaze loss and flaking.
