Lot 151:
Soviet School, A collection of twelve nesting dolls (matryoshka), Hand-painted and lacquered wood, Mid-to-late 20th century
Description
A composite collection of vintage Russian nesting dolls, or matryoshka, comprising two disparate sets of hand-painted and lacquered wood construction. The principal group is a ten-piece set rendered in a traditional folk style, featuring figures in vibrant red shawls with white polka-dot borders and stylised floral aprons. The secondary group consists of two dolls of a more slender, elongated profile, decorated with a yellow ground and black-line floral motifs accented with orange. These pieces are representative of the souvenir production common in the Soviet Union during the latter half of the 20th century. No Cyrillic signatures or factory marks are present. One doll retains a small white inventory label numbered 2819.
Condition report:
The dolls are in good overall condition, exhibiting minor surface wear and light abrasions to the lacquer commensurate with age. The painted decoration remains bright, and the wooden bodies are free from significant cracks or structural defects.
