Lot 152:
A Japanese Satsuma Ware Baluster Vase and Scalloped Bowl
Description
A decorative collection of Japanese Satsuma ware comprising a baluster-form vase and a shallow bowl with a scalloped rim. Both pieces are crafted from cream-coloured earthenware featuring the characteristic fine crackle glaze. The decoration consists of hand-painted overglaze enamels and raised gilding. The vase is designed with a dark ground embellished with floral motifs, framing two large cartouches depicting traditional figural scenes. The bowl features a central narrative scene of figures within a landscape, surrounded by a decorative border of flying cranes. Both items bear red square seal marks to the underside, with the bowl displaying additional small red markings. These pieces reflect the traditional export style of the late 19th to mid-20th century. Vase height approximately 16 cm; bowl diameter approximately 19 cm.
Condition report:
Both pieces appear to be in good overall condition. There are no apparent chips, cracks, or restorations visible upon inspection. Minor surface wear and light rubbing to the gilded highlights consistent with age. The fine crazing is inherent to the glaze and manufacture of Satsuma earthenware.
