A British Pattern 1888 Mark I Type 2 Bayonet and Scabbard
Description
A British Pattern 1888 Mark I Type 2 bayonet, designed for the Lee-Metford and Long Lee-Enfield rifles. The weapon features a double-edged steel blade with a central fuller. The hilt is constructed with wooden grip scales secured by two brass rivets, a steel crossguard with a muzzle ring, and a steel pommel housing a spring-loaded locking catch. The bayonet is accompanied by a black leather scabbard with a brass locket featuring a frog stud and a brass chape at the tip. The ricasso of the blade bears impressed stamps, however, these are worn and the characters are not legible as specific names or dates. Two white adhesive labels are present on the scabbard: one handwritten reading 12852 D and a printed auction label reading SHELBYS AUCTIONEERS LOT 246 01132602026.
