Mid-20th Century Rococo Revival Style Telephone Seat in Burgundy Velvet
Description
A mid-20th-century telephone seat, also known as a hall bench or gossip chair, designed in the Rococo Revival style. The piece features a combination of a single upholstered seat and an integrated flat wooden tabletop on the right-hand side, traditionally used for holding a telephone. The frame is constructed from a light-to-medium brown stained hardwood, featuring an asymmetrical high backrest with a central shell-and-scroll carved cresting rail and a scrolled armrest. The seat and backrest are upholstered in deep burgundy red velvet, with the backrest displaying deep-button tufting. The upholstery is finished with a line of brass-coloured metal tacks along the border where the fabric meets the wood. The unit is supported by four cabriole legs. No maker’s marks or stamps are visible on the exterior surfaces of the piece.
