Lot 392:
Two Portuguese majolica-style ceramic items comprising a fish-form vessel and a lobster sculpture
Description
This lot consists of two large-scale earthenware items produced in Portugal, featuring a naturalist aesthetic characteristic of the Caldas da Rainha ceramic tradition. The first item is a serving vessel realistically modelled as a fish, possibly a sea bream or snapper. It is decorated with a relief-moulded scale pattern finished in a red and cream glaze with hand-painted black accents to the fins, tail, and eyes. The vessel features an open back and is accompanied by a ceramic ladle with a fish-head terminal. The second item is a large sculpture of a lobster, rendered in a glossy, mottled red and orange glaze to imitate the appearance of a cooked shell. Both pieces exhibit realistic anatomical detailing. The underside of the fish vessel bears a circular stamped mark and is inscribed MADE IN PORTUGAL in capital letters; however, the factory name within the circular stamp is not clearly legible.
Fish: Length: 37 cm (14.5 in)
Lobster: Length: 48 cm (19 in).
