Lot 285:
A Collection of Ceramics including Character Jugs and Dickens Ware Style Plates
Description
A collection of earthenware ceramics featuring Dickensian and nautical themes, comprising four character jugs and two display plates, attributed to Royal Doulton. The assortment includes a large character jug depicting a fisherman in a brown hat and green coat with a leaping salmon forming the handle. The smaller jugs include a figure in a red-spotted bonnet, resembling the character Sairey Gamp, alongside two male figures in period attire. The two circular display plates are decorated with scenes from Charles Dickens’ novels, including a ‘Marine Store’ scene from ‘The Old Curiosity Shop’, executed using transfer-printing with hand-coloured highlights. These pieces are characteristic of the ‘Dickens Ware’ series and Royal Doulton character jug production from the mid-20th century. No factory marks or backstamps are visible as the items are shown face-up; a small adhesive lot label marked ‘109’ is present on the largest jug.
