Description

A French Model 1866 sabre bayonet, designed for use with the Chassepot bolt-action breech-loading rifle. The weapon features a characteristic recurved steel yataghan blade with a single wide fuller extending along most of its length. The hilt is constructed with a ribbed brass grip, incorporating a mortise slot and a spring-loaded press-stud for attachment. The crossguard is made of iron and includes a muzzle ring and a distinctive forward-swept, hooked quillon. This model was a primary infantry sidearm during the Franco-Prussian War and many were subsequently captured and utilised by German forces. A modern paper inventory tag marked 8814 is attached to the blade near the hilt. No period maker’s marks, inspection stamps, or spine inscriptions are visible in the current condition.
