Lot 383:
An Assortment of Japanese Meiji and Taisho Period Export Ceramics
Description
An assortment of Japanese ceramics including a partial tea service and decorative cabinet pieces. The main tea service is decorated in a Lohan or Thousand Faces pattern, depicting figures with gilt halos on a terracotta-red ground. This set consists of teapots, a cream jug, teacups, and saucers, all featuring overglaze enamels, raised moriage, and gilding. Included is a separate teapot with a pale peach-coloured ground and floral decoration. The collection also features a large circular charger hand-painted with a landscape scene showing figures in a garden, and a small circular covered pot with a dragon design. These items are characteristic of Japanese export wares produced for the Western market in the late Meiji (1868–1912) and Taisho (1912–1926) periods. A white sticker with the handwritten digits 501 is visible on the covered pot. No manufacturer backstamps or signatures are observable on the surfaces shown.
