Description

This collection of mid-twentieth-century British glazed stoneware comprises items in the Saffron and Heirloom patterns, both designed by John Clappison for Hornsea Pottery of East Yorkshire. The Saffron pattern pieces, introduced circa 1970, feature an orange and caramel-toned glaze with a repeating embossed geometric floral motif. This group includes graduated storage jars with wooden lids, embossed with the labels TEA, COFFEE, and a partial label for FLOUR. The collection is further composed of several mugs and a smaller cup or ramekin. The Heirloom pattern, introduced circa 1967, is represented by a large cylindrical vessel and a matching plate, finished in a dark brown and olive green glaze with a repeating stylized teardrop motif. The storage jars are fitted with wooden lids, likely made of teak. No factory marks are visible on the undersides in this view, although the forms and relief-moulded decoration are characteristic of the manufacturer.
