French Municipal Fire Brigade Nickel-Plated and Brass Helmet
Description
A French municipal fire brigade helmet (Casque de Sapeur-Pompier) from the Third Republic period, circa 1885–1914. The piece features a polished nickel-plated steel bowl which exhibits surface oxidation and loss of plating. The helmet is mounted with a prominent gilt-brass comb-style crest, adorned with a frontal flaming bomb motif. The front plate consists of an elaborate stamped brass design showing a central heraldic shield supported by two rampant lions, surmounted by a crown. A scrolled banner is present at the base of the plate with embossed text, although specific lettering is illegible. The front visor is fitted with a reinforced brass rim and decorated with embossed sprays of oak and laurel leaves meeting at a central flowerhead. A white adhesive label with the handwritten number 8814 is present on the right side of the bowl.
