British Red Cross Society War Service Medal 1914-1918
Description
A British Red Cross Society War Service Medal for the period 1914-1918. This gilt bronze medal was awarded to members of the British Red Cross Society or the Order of St John who performed at least 1,000 hours of voluntary service during the First World War and were ineligible for official government campaign medals. The obverse features a central cross within a laurel wreath, surrounded by the circular inscription BRITISH RED CROSS SOCIETY FOR WAR SERVICE: 1914-1918. The reverse displays the Latin motto of the International Red Cross, INTER ARMA CARITAS, also within a laurel wreath. The medal is suspended from its original plain white silk ribbon, which is mounted onto a gilt metal horizontal pin-back brooch bar for wear. This specimen is unnamed, as is standard for this award.
