World War I Belgian Inter-Allied Victory Medal
Description
An official Belgian issue of the World War I Inter-Allied Victory Medal, also known as the Medal of the Victory. The circular bronze medal was designed by the sculptor Paul DuBois. The obverse features a winged figure of Victory standing upon a globe, holding a sword in her right hand and a laurel wreath in her left. The reverse displays the Belgian coat of arms at the centre, encircled by nine shields representing the primary Allied nations. The outer edge carries the bilingual inscription DE GROOTE OORLOG TOT DE BESCHAVING and LA GRANDE GUERRE POUR LA CIVILISATION, which translates to The Great War for Civilisation. The medal is attached via a ball and ring suspension to a double-rainbow moiré silk ribbon. A small white adhesive inventory label with the handwritten number 9703 is affixed to the ribbon.
