A French Third Republic Order of the Legion of Honour Knight Class Medal Dated 1870
Description
A French Third Republic Order of the Legion of Honour (Légion d’honneur) medal, Chevalier (Knight) grade. The decoration is constructed as a five-armed, double-pointed cross in silver or silver-gilt with white enamel. Positioned between the arms of the cross is a green enameled wreath composed of laurel and oak leaves.
The obverse features a central gilt medallion with the profile of Marianne facing right, the personification of the French Republic. This is surrounded by a blue enamel ring inscribed REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE 1870. The reverse central medallion depicts two crossed French tricolour flags, surrounded by a blue enamel ring bearing the motto HONNEUR ET PATRIE.
The medal is suspended from a similarly styled green enameled laurel and oak wreath. It is attached to its original red silk moiré ribbon, which is mounted on a silver-toned metal suspension bar with ball finials. A small rectangular paper tag with the handwritten number 9703 is adhered to the ribbon.
