Victorian South Africa Medal 1877-1879 with 1879 Clasp
Description
A silver South Africa Medal (1877-1879), commonly referred to as the Zulu War Medal. The obverse features the diademed and veiled head of Queen Victoria facing left with the inscription VICTORIA REGINA. The reverse depicts a crouching lion beneath a protea bush with a Zulu shield and assegais in the foreground, with the legend SOUTH AFRICA in the upper field. The medal is fitted with a swivelling scroll suspension and a single silver campaign clasp inscribed 1879. It is suspended from an orange-yellow ribbon with dark blue vertical stripes. A small white adhesive label with the handwritten number 9703 is present on the ribbon. Naming on the medal edge is not visible in the provided images.
