A Collection of Tommy Atkins Hand-Painted Cast Metal Toy Soldiers British Military Medical Figures including Elephant Ambulance
Description
A collection of hand-painted cast metal miniature figurines by Tommy Atkins, depicting British military medical services in a colonial or First World War context. The set features an Indian elephant outfitted as a field ambulance with a white banner bearing a red cross, carrying a wooden litter for wounded soldiers and led by a mahout. The collection further includes several female nursing figures in various uniforms, including Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) style with red crosses and capes. Also present is a figurine of a wounded soldier in hospital blues seated in a large-wheeled wheelchair being attended to by a nurse, and a male figure in a British military khaki service dress uniform with a peaked cap. Each figure is mounted on a thin, circular green metal base. A white adhesive tag with the handwritten number 4703 is present on one figure.
