A Victorian Parquetry and Inlaid Wood Monocular Photograph Viewer
Description
A mid-19th-century monocular photograph viewer, likely intended for the viewing of daguerreotypes or ambrotypes. The case is constructed from wood with the lid and top surfaces featuring an intricate parquetry basket-weave pattern inlay. The edges are finished with cream-coloured stringing, likely bone or ivory. The side panels are decorated with light-coloured inlaid floral and foliate motifs, possibly mother-of-pearl or a contrasting light wood. The hinged lid is attached with two brass barrel hinges and opens to reveal an interior base lined with original blue velvet. A small brass pin catch is located on the front edge of the main compartment. The lid houses a square glass magnifying lens. A white rectangular paper inventory label is adhered to the top lid with the number 6182 handwritten in black ink.
