A Set of Four 19th Century Mahogany Dining Chairs in the Queen Anne Style
Description
This matched set of four dining chairs is crafted from solid mahogany with a deep, polished finish. Each chair features a tall, waisted back with a sophisticated pierced central splat, intricately carved with a central rosette and radiating fan motifs. The design reflects a 19th-century revival of earlier Georgian aesthetics, combining the curvilinear form of the Queen Anne period with more ornate George III decorative elements. The chairs are supported by elegant cabriole front legs terminating in classic pad feet, balanced by gently splayed rear legs. The construction utilises traditional mortise and tenon joinery. The chairs are fitted with drop-in slip seats, designed for easy removal and reupholstery. No maker’s marks, stamps, or labels are present on the frames. 98cm H x 52cm W x 48cm D.
Condition report:
The mahogany frames remain structurally sound with no significant movement in the joints. The timber surfaces display a characterful patina with various scuffs, minor scratches, and localised wear to the finish, particularly on the legs and back rails, consistent with age and domestic use. The current upholstery is in poor condition, being heavily soiled and worn, and requires a full replacement. No evidence of active woodworm or major structural repairs was observed during inspection.
