Lot 189:
A Pair of Victorian Measham Bargeware Treacle Glaze Teapots
Description
A pair of late Victorian Measham Bargeware teapots, executed in earthenware or stoneware and covered in a rich, mottled brown treacle glaze, characteristic of Derbyshire pottery. The bodies are heavily relief molded with floral clusters and decorative elements, highlighted by polychrome enamel detailing. The larger teapot features a novelty finial shaped like a miniature teapot and bears a molded banner inscription reading PRESENT FROM A FRIEND 1880. The smaller teapot features a banner inscription identifying the retailer as ALBERT WOODHEAD DRAUGHTON STREET BRADFORD. These pieces are typical examples of souvenir bargeware pottery popular in the late 19th century.
