A Late Victorian Holmes-Style Handheld Stereoscope and Collection of Stereoview Cards
Description
A late 19th-century handheld stereoscope viewer constructed from a wooden central rail and handle with an embossed metal hood. The sliding wooden card holder is fitted with wire supports to accommodate standard stereoview cards. The metal hood features stamped scrolling foliate patterns and is lined at the edge with brown velvet. Two fixed glass prismatic lenses are set within the hood to merge the dual images into a three-dimensional view. The viewer is accompanied by a collection of approximately 20 stereoview cards depicting historical scenes, including military processions, large public gatherings, and topographical views. The cards are printed on cardstock mounts. One card in the collection bears printed text on the left margin reading Universal View Co and on the right margin Stereoscopic Photographs followed by London, England. Other cards feature printed titles such as The Garden of and Firth.
