Description

This is a large Japanese porcelain charger decorated in the Imari style, dating from the nineteenth century. The piece is constructed from porcelain and features decoration in underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze polychrome enamels, primarily iron-red and green, along with gilded highlights. The central circular medallion contains a stylised floral motif in underglaze blue and overglaze red. This central element is surrounded by a radiating design of six spiral-form panels. These panels alternate between scenes of gnarled pine trees with blossoms and stylised floral sprays against a white ground. The panels are separated by bold bands of cobalt blue and iron-red featuring white geometric and scrolling patterns. The reverse of the charger is decorated with three simple trailing floral sprays in underglaze blue. Two concentric blue circles surround the unglazed footring. No maker’s marks or signatures are present on the base.
Diameter: 42 cm (16.5 inches).
