A Pair of Late 19th-Century French Spelter Figures of Maritime Workers
Description
A pair of patinated spelter figures depicting maritime workers, likely fishermen, in the French academic style. One figure is cast holding a fishing net aloft with a coiled rope or catch in his other hand. The companion figure is shown with a long-handled shellfish rake and a small hand-net. Both figures are dressed in worker’s attire with hats and are standing on naturalistic rocky bases featuring relief-molded aquatic plants. The sculptures are mounted on two-tiered circular pedestals, each with a central section featuring a red mottled faux-marble painted finish. An auction lot label reading 12675 p is attached to one base. No maker’s signatures or foundry marks are visible.
