A Late Victorian Stained Wood Armchair Commode
Description
A late Victorian or early 20th-century armchair commode, also referred to as a close stool, constructed from a stained hardwood with a honey-toned finish. The backrest features a shaped crest rail decorated with a central carved circular medallion and incised scroll motifs, positioned over four turned spindles. The chair is designed with scrolling open arms and a hinged rectangular seat. When raised, the seat reveals a circular aperture housing a white glazed ceramic commode pot complete with a matching lid. The piece is supported by ring-turned front legs and square-section raked rear legs, utilising mortise and tenon joinery.
