Lot 72:
A Jacobethan Revival carved oak mule chest, late 19th or early 20th century
Description
A Jacobethan Revival style mule chest constructed from oak. The rectangular top is composed of three panels and opens on three brass butt hinges to reveal a large storage compartment. The front face features three carved panels: a central panel with scrolling foliate and acanthus leaf motifs, flanked by two side panels with stylised floral designs. The base of the chest houses two short drawers, each fitted with a darkened metal drop-pull handle. The piece is supported by a plinth base on short, block-style feet. The oak displays characteristic medullary rays throughout. The interior of the drawers and the main compartment are constructed with secondary wood. No maker’s marks are visible. A small white inventory sticker is present on the front edge of the lid.
